The Benefits of Infusing Medical Cannabis Into Foods

When it comes to the way in which you consume medical CBD or any other form of medical cannabis, it's all about personal preference. This being said, ingesting medical cannabis carries many benefits most people are unaware of, such as:

If you're interested in trying your hand at cooking with medical cannabis, here are a few simple recipes and foodie ideas to get you started. Just bear in mind that if you are using dried cannabis buds or flowers, these products must always undergo decarboxylation, first.

Let's start with a few cooking basics that can literally be infused into almost any recipe you choose to make:

1. Cannabis Cooking Oil

Also known as cannaoil, this is a staple ingredient to make and store in your cupboard if you prefer to ingest your medical cannabis, versus any other method. Whether you're using a dried form of cannabis bud or flower, or a CBD tincture, it can be infused with almost any type of cooking oil you prefer.

Some of the more stable and popular oils for this type of infusion include avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and safflower oil. You can use cannabis oil as the base of all the dishes you cook, or you can drizzle it on salads, infuse it into your warm drinks, or even use it topically.

2. Cannabis Butter

Another great staple that's worth making in a large batch and storing in your fridge is cannabis-infused butter, also known as cannabutter. This is the ''OG'' of all cannabis recipes and is a good place to start when experimenting with cannabis/food infusions.

The best thing about cannabutter is its versatility. You can incorporate it into almost any recipe, whether it's baked goods, savoury dishes, or even slathered on toast. For this recipe, you'll need 400-500 grams of unsalted butter and approximately 7 grams of dried cannabis flowers (that have been decarboxylated first).

The secret to getting this recipe perfect is water. Make sure to melt your butter in a saucepan, add in your dried cannabis, then add in two cups of water and mix. Let the mixture simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours. Do not let the temperature exceed 120 degrees Celsius.

Make sure to sieve the mixture through cheesecloth when the butter begins to look thick and glossy. Refrigerate and allow it to settle overnight.

3. Cannabis-Infused Sugar

This recipe is a little more complicated, but once you've perfected it, cannabis sugar can be used in almost any recipe of your choice. You can use it in baked goods, put in your morning coffee, over your cereal -- the list is endless.

The recipe for this is simple: you'll need dried cannabis flowers, sugar, and alcohol (make sure to avoid isopropyl alcohol, though!). Through evaporation, you'll be left with cannabis-infused sugar crystals.

If you're using high-proof alcohol, it's best to make a sugar syrup first, then add your alcohol to that. Just bear in mind that the drying process will take a little longer. If you're using lower-proof alcohol, with higher water content, you don't have to worry about making a sugar syrup.

For this recipe, you'll need 3.5 grams of coarsely chopped cannabis flowers. You'll also need 100 grams of white sugar and 150ml of almost any drinkable alcohol. Clear alcohols are a good option, such as gin or vodka. Don't worry about the alcohol content -- this dissolves during the drying process.  

4. Cannabis-Infused Honey

This simple concoction is also called cannahoney is one of those staple recipes that can be used in almost all types of baking and other meals. It's as simple as making cannaoil, but it's important to invest in high-quality honey that is fairly runny.

You can use dried and decarboxylated cannabis flowers or buds, or CBD tincture to create cannahoney. For this recipe, you'll need 1 cup of honey to approximately 3.5 grams of dried cannabis. The best way to combine the two is in a double-boiler over the stove.

Another added benefit is that honey has brilliant antioxidant properties, so not only are you getting the benefits of medical cannabis, but also the many benefits of nature's sweetest nectar.  

5. Cannabis-Infused Tea

This is yet another simple yet effective way to ingest medical cannabis. You can either use a knob of your cannabutter, cannaoil, or cannabis-infused sugar to make yourself a sweet, calming, warm drink.

A delicious idea for cannabis-infused tea is to make a chai tea using coconut milk, especially if you're using a strain of cannabis with a higher THC count. Pairing your medical cannabis with a good amount of fat helps the body to better absorb and assimilate THC in your system.

Steep your chai tea bag in coconut milk, add in a tablespoon of cannabutter, cannaoil, or cannabis-infused sugar, and allow it to soak together for a good few minutes before enjoying it before bed.

6. Cannabis Popcorn

There is no hard and fast rule that says medical cannabis can only be infused with sweet treats! You can create yourself a delicious savoury snack with popcorn. It's as simple as making regular popcorn -- you'll just need to swap out regular butter for cannabutter or cannaoil.

Start off by heating up a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Add in a generous tablespoon of your premade cannabutter or cannaoil and allow it to warm up. Then, add in your popcorn kernels and place the lid on the pan. Make sure to shake your saucepan regularly to ensure all the kernels are being coated with the cannabutter/cannaoil.

Once your popcorn is ready, who not make it sweet and salty? Add a large pinch of salt and a large pinch of cannabis-infused sugar for a fun treat.

7. Canna-Mac-and-Cheese

That's right, you can even make a wholesome, traditional dish such as macaroni-and-cheese, using a cannabis-infused edible. Of course, you don't want to actually feed this to children, especially if your cannabis product has high levels of THC. But as a fun, adults-only meal, it's super easy to put together.

In order to make this dish, you can use cannabutter or cannaoil to generously coat your elbow macaroni. You can then add in a few extra veggies such as spinach, parsley, and basil to make it extra ''green''. Top off the dish with lashings of your cheese of choice and bake in an over-proof dish until the top is golden brown and oozing.

8. Chocolate Chip Canna-Cookie-Dough Balls

If you have a sweet tooth and want to experiment with cannabis-infused baked goods, this is a great go-to idea. The best part is that these cookie dough balls don't actually require any baking.

This recipe is also great if you don't like the idea of eating raw egg in your cookie dough batter. But instead of the egg, you'll need cannabutter. The rest of the recipe requires flour, milk, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips.

Once you've rolled your dough together, these will keep in an air-tight container for up to a week.

9. Cannabis-Infused Brownies

Would this list of cannabis edibles be complete without the addition of brownies? Definitely not. This recipe is the one and only original cannabis-infused baked good to have become popular many years ago.

In order to make these gooey, delicious cannabis-infused brownies, you're going to need a 1/4 cup of cannabutter. The rest of the recipe requires 113 grams of unsalted butter, 340 grams of dark chocolate, 213 grams of packed light brown sugar, 150 grams of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon fine sea salt, 4 eggs, and 90 grams of all-purpose flour.

10. Oatmeal Cannabis Cookies

To complete the list of sweet treats that can be made with medical cannabis, you have oatmeal cannabis cookies. Who doesn't love a good oatmeal cookie, especially when it's packed with oats, pecans, and raisins? Your key ingredient in this recipe, however, is cannabutter.

For this recipe, you'll need a 3/4 cup of cannabutter, 2 large eggs, 2 cups of raw sugar, 2 cups of wholewheat flour, and 2 cups of rolled oats. You can then flavour them as you please with vanilla, ground nutmeg, cinnamon, raisins, pecans, and even chocolate chips.

Eat Your Edibles With Caution

It's important to bear in mind that the effects of edibles are very different from those of smoking, vaping, or medical cannabis tinctures. If you're new to the world of cannabis edibles, it's wise to proceed with caution when baking, cooking, and consuming.

A good rule-of-thumb is to start off low and slow. Use low doses or low amounts of cannabis product. Always eat the product slowly, allowing yourself to feel the effects before you consume more.

Remember that most people only feel the effects of edibles at least 40-minutes to an hour after consumption. But this is dependent on the dose you've used and your own metabolism.

It's also wise to keep in mind that you're never going to get the dose perfectly even across anything that you cook or bake. The way in which the cannabinoids are dispersed is very random. So this means your first bite could be quite potent, but the second quite mild.

Most of this time, you may need to recreate a few dishes until you can find the perfect ratio of cannabis products to other ingredients. But it's always best to start off with small doses, then work your way up.
